The coronavirus highlights how much the world depends on China for key ingredients.
The US Department of Agriculture recently reached out to stakeholders in the dietary supplement industry to gain insight on the toll the coronavirus has taken on businesses. In response, the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) surveyed their members on disruptions they may be experiencing. Now there’s a new disruption. It’s COVID-19 and a lot of people are saying, ‘okay, I have to get healthy, I have to stay at home, so they’re loading up on vitamin C,” said Randal Kreienbrink, vice president of marketing at Martin Bauer, a global ingredient supplier. For those seeking a natural source of vitamin C, the ingredient supplier sells acerola and acai. Kreienbrink told us that acerola, which somes from South America, is their biggest seller in that category. “Right now, we’re not seeing big delays.Vincent Tian, CEO and founder of online retailer NutriVitaShop based in California, said he is experiencing a shortage of vitamins, especially ascorbic acid. “Most of the manufacturers are overseas. Most of the supply is being bought up by Europe and there is a shortage right now in the US.

The global supply chain is a complex network of suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, retailers, wholesalers and customers. Effective SCM is about optimizing this network to ensure that everything gets where it needs to be, when it needs to be there—and as smoothly as possible.
SCM also involves the coordination of external partners and both internal resources and operations management. According to the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP), “in essence, supply chain management integrates supply and demand management within and across companies.”1Your subscription will be delivered in English. Supply chains are the conduit through which strategy becomes reality, and the lifeline between the business and its customers.Yet, an EY survey shows that 88% of supply chain executives say that the C-suite views the supply chain primarily as a cost center—in contrast to the supply chain leaders themselves, among whom the same percentage say that their supply chain plays a vital role in enhancing customer experiences. The possibilities are seemingly endless and come together powerfully in digital twins, where scenarios like manufacturing changeovers and disruptions from natural disasters can be tested virtually. ... Yet, in our survey, 42% of supply chain leaders report that their organizations are just starting to adopt digital tools and cloud-based platforms for supply chain functions, indicating a significant opportunity for further digital transformation. These tools are essential for achieving speed, efficiency and lower costs—a rare trifecta when approached thoughtfully—and they play a vital role in addressing the two questions listed below. The EY survey of supply chain leaders indicates that 84% prioritize internal operations over customer needs, often emphasizing cost reduction at the expense of a strategic advantage.
Nitrogen (N) availability is a powerful controller of soil carbon (C) cycling in temperate forests, affecting plant productivity and microbial activit…
Enhanced rhizosphere input from increased plant productivity can stimulate the decomposition of native soil organic matter (SOM), termed the “priming effect”, with an effect size that is affected by N availability.Using soils from N-fertilization field-experiments conducted in larch and mixed forest plantations, we investigated how N availability influenced the priming of soil organic C (SOC) mineralization and soil organic N (SON) mineralization by adding 13C-labelled glucose semi-continuously (every third day) to simulate the semi-continuous delivery of rhizosphere inputs. We found that semi-continuous additions of glucose induced a repeating pattern for the priming of SOC mineralization with an initial decrease followed by an increase. This repeating pattern of SOC mineralization reversely coincided with repeating dynamics in the level of bacterial growth which first increased followed by a decrease. The labile C additions induced a gradually increasing priming of SON mineralization, which was greater than the priming of SOC mineralization (i.e. “selective microbial N-mining”). The priming of SOC mineralization and SON mineralization were both reduced by N fertilization.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the vulnerabilities of global supply chains, leading to significant delays and shortages in various sectors as supply chain networks faced restrictions and abrupt changes in demand.Supply chain management differs from logistics, though they are interconnected; logistics focuses specifically on the movement and storage of goods, while supply chain management oversees the entire process from raw material to consumer sale. The steps may include sourcing raw materials, moving them to production, then transporting the finished products to a distribution center or retail store where they can be delivered to consumers. A supply chain includes producers, vendors, warehouses, transportation companies, distribution centers, and retailers.A supply chain starts when a business gets an order. Its key functions are product development, marketing, operations, distribution, finance, and customer service. Effective supply chain management lowers costs and boosts profits.

Creating More Efficient Petrochemical Supply Chains If approved, this $85 billion merger could do something Washington has talked about for years but rarely delivered: dramatically increase the efficiency of a critical U.S.: the chain of processes, businesses, etc. by which a commodity is produced and distributed : the companies, materials, and systems involved in manufacturing and delivering goods · The pandemic has disrupted nearly every aspect of the global supply chain—that's the usually invisible pathway of manufacturing, transportation and logistics that gets goods from where they are manufactured, mined or grown to where they are going.… [W]hen a finite supply of packaging can't keep up with demand, when there aren't enough longshoremen or truck drivers or postal workers, when a container ship gets wedged sideways in one of the world's busiest shipping lanes—the effects ripple outward for weeks or months, emptying shelves and raising prices in ways that can seem random.

A supply chain is made up of interconnected parts of a whole, all of which add up to finished products bought by customers. Take automobiles, for example. Before a consumer buys a car, iron ore is extracted from the earth. The ore is transported to a plant, where it’s turned into steel, which is made into the chassis of the automobile. To make the car, various components—from engines to batteries, electrical components, rubber tires, a metal body, and paint—are assembled. Once the car is made, it’s sold in a retail setting to the end consumer. That’s a good illustration of several types of supply chain stakeholders:That includes not only physical components but also various value-adding activities that might be classified as part of the “knowledge economy”—things such as innovation, design, marketing, and sales—and that lead to the development of a product ready for customers. When any link in a supply chain isn’t working optimally, you might say the supply chain has been disrupted. For example, an increase in inbound material costs because one material costs more this year than it did last year can have major implications on a company’s cost structure. Or labor market mismatches can cause operational concerns—for instance, if transport companies can’t find enough people who want to drive trucks to deliver goods. There are five areas where supply chain vulnerabilities most often show up:

A supply chain is a complex logistics system that consists of facilities that convert raw materials into finished products and distribute them to end consumers or end customers, while supply chain management deals with the flow of goods in distribution channels within the supply chain in the most efficient manner.Suppliers in a supply chain are often ranked by "tier", with first-tier suppliers (also called "direct suppliers") supplying directly to the client, second-tier suppliers supplying to the first tier, and so on.The phrase "supply chain" may have been first published in a 1905 article in The Independent which briefly mentions the difficulty of "keeping a supply chain with India unbroken" during the British expedition to Tibet.Mentzer et al. suggest that at least three entities are required for there to be a "supply chain". At the end of the supply chain, materials and finished products only flow there because of the customer behaviour at the end of the chain; academics Alan Harrison and Janet Godsell argue that "supply chain processes should be coordinated in order to focus on end customer buying behaviour", and look for "customer responsiveness" as an indicator confirming that materials are able to flow "through a sequence of supply chain processes in order to meet end customer buying behaviour".A chain is actually a complex and dynamic supply and demand network. As part of their efforts to demonstrate ethical practices, many large companies and global brands are integrating codes of conduct and guidelines into their corporate cultures and management systems.
